Celebrate Bears Ears Bears Ears Partnership will host their signature biennial event, Celebrate Bears Ears, on Saturday, March 7th from 8:00am to 5:00pm in Bluff, Utah. It will be held at the Bluff Community Center. This event will include educational panels and discussions, as well as celebration and partnership to deepen the understanding of the Bears Ears landscape. Joy Harjo, the 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate and an author of ten books of poetry and several plays, will be the keynote speaker. The Durango Betties, Durango’s adult women’s hockey team, will face off against the Durango Area Youth Hockey (DAYHA) Girls U19 Team in the 2nd annual Women’s Hockey Classic game on Saturday, March 7 to raise funds to grow the youth program. This event is more than just an exciting hockey game, it’s a chance to invest in a stronger future for girls in our community through the power of sport. Team sports, like hockey, provide more than just physical activity. They teach resilience, teamwork, confidence, and leadership — skills that extend far beyond the rink and into every aspect of life. When you empower a girl through sport, you empower her for life. Girls who play team sports are: ● More likely to graduate and pursue higher education. ● More confident in leadership roles and professional settings. ● More resilient in facing life’s challenges. This is reflected in the diverse players on both the Girls U19 and Betties team. The Girls U19 team is comprised of middle school and high school students who include a junior class president, National honor society members, and school leaders. Some have just started playing hockey this year while others have been playing for over 11 years. The Betties team have players who have played hockey for over 25 years and are mothers, business owners, a national company president, and non-profit executive director. The 2nd Annual Women’s Hockey Classic fundraiser will be held on March 7, 2026 at Chapman Hill Ice Rink from 5 - 7 pm. Beer/wine tent and silent auction will open at 4:30 pm. State of the Animas (and other local rivers) Every spring we gather to learn from the experts in cold water conservation about the health of our beloved Animas River (and surrounding tributaries). Join us this year to listen to Chris Chambers and Ty Churchwell from National TU inform us about their efforts. John Bosowski, 5RTU conservation chair, will update us on Lightner Creek sedimentation issues. Kade Jackson with CPW will update us on the state of the fisheries, and Scott Roberts from MSI will tell us about a recent study we helped fund as well as the health of bugs that feed trout. An addition for this year is that Sensa Wolcott, who leads the Animas Watershed Partnership, will give us an update on that process. Please come early to grab food and mingle. Visit With Respect Ambassador Training Bears Ears Partnership will host a FREE Visit With Respect Ambassador training event on Saturday, March 21st from 8:30am until 4:30pm at 567 West Main Street, Bluff, Utah. The event will be held at the Bears Ears Education Center. This one-day training course will allow attendees to practice the skills needed to be one of the on-the-ground Visit with Respect Ambassadors where they will serve as a friendly presence at the most frequently visited trails in the Bears Ears region.
