Forests to Faucets professional development for educators to be held June 4th- 5th at Fort Lewis College A free, professional development workshop for teachers and educators will be offered June 4th-5th, 2026 at Fort Lewis College. This workshop: Forests to Faucets: My Water Comes from the San Juan Mountains is offered in partnership by Mountain Studies Institute, San Juan Mountains Association, and Water Information Program. Participating teachers will have the opportunity to wear the “student hat” as they explore relevant topics in forest health and water ecology. Teachers will sample place-based field trips, will do hands-on activities, and learn from water professionals, all of which they can bring back to their students and classrooms next fall. All participants will receive free lunch, a shared drive of all teaching materials, a kit of classroom materials, and a certificate for 16 hours of professional development. Drought and water shortages are quickly becoming prominent issues facing our youth. Through this workshop, teachers will gain skills to help their students understand our water future through fun, interactive ways! Among the expert speakers presenting at the workshop will be staff from the City of Durango. Teachers will learn first-hand about current measures the city treats and manages our water supply. Registration is at https://www.mountainstudies.org/foreststofaucets and requires a $50 deposit, which will be refunded after completion of the workshop. Please direct all questions to jewell@mountainstudies.org. Registration closes May 22nd, 2026.

State of the Animas (and other local rivers) Every spring we gather to learn from the experts in cold water conservation about the health of our beloved Animas River (and surrounding tributaries). Join us this year to listen to Chris Chambers and Ty Churchwell from National TU inform us about their efforts. John Bosowski, 5RTU conservation chair, will update us on Lightner Creek sedimentation issues. Kade Jackson with CPW will update us on the state of the fisheries, and Scott Roberts from MSI will tell us about a recent study we helped fund as well as the health of bugs that feed trout. An addition for this year is that Sensa Wolcott, who leads the Animas Watershed Partnership, will give us an update on that process. Please come early to grab food and mingle. What the River Knows: Glen Canyon Documentary at Durango Arts Center Description: Glen Canyon Institute, in collaboration with Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, presents What the River Knows, a Good Intentions Paving Co. documentary exploring the reemergence of Glen Canyon from the receding waters of Lake Powell reservoir. As the West faces the urgent need to redesign water management, we are offered the chance to restore one of the planet’s most stunning landscapes. What the River Knows explores this unique reflection point in a centuries-long history, weaving together past and present to reveal a new way forward for the Colorado River. The evening will open with Glen Canyon Rises, a documentary short from Crow Canyon Archeological Center featuring Hopi archaeologist Lyle Balenquah and author Craig Childs. This powerful visual and narrative experience reveals layers of human history embedded in the landscape. As water levels fall, generations of cultural footprints are revealed, and dormant ecological systems begin to stir once more. Following the film screening, the event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring: - Lorelei Cloud (three-term Southern Ute Tribal Council leader, Colorado Water Conservation Board member, co-founder of The Indigenous Women’s Leadership Network) - Teal Lehto (water rights activist, river conservation content creator @we) - Daryl Vigil (Co-Director of the Water & Tribes Initiative Audience Q+A to follow. Stories Over Stigma Stories Over Stigma is a project designed to deepen understanding of substance use and the personal, social, and systemic factors that shape it. The project examines how stigma impacts people who use substances, particularly their ability to access support and services. It also offers practical tools and resources to help community members, professionals, and caregivers care for themselves while supporting others. Participants will hear a powerful personal story of recovery that highlights lived experience and the journey toward change, helping to humanize substance use and challenge common misconceptions. The purpose of this event is to increase knowledge, encourage reflection on personal stigma, and promote compassionate, informed perspectives. By reframing how we think and talk about substance use, Stories Over Stigma aims to foster empathy, reduce harm, and strengthen community connections. March 20th from 6pm-7pm at Durango Public Library This is a free event. La Plata County Public Health Please contact Sierra Andrews for more information at 970-759-7047 or sandrews@lpcgov.org
