4 the Children 4 the Children, a non-profit organization based in Durango, is looking for dedicated community volunteers to assist with its mission: to support children in Southwest Colorado who have experienced abuse, neglect, and family-related trauma, and to protect childhood today for stronger families tomorrow. Volunteers are needed in two program areas at 4 the Children. Volunteers in the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program advocate through the family court for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers advocate for safe and permanent homes and serve as the voice of a child or sibling group in the court system. These volunteers build positive relationships with their assigned children, respect the confidentiality of the court process, and assist family court judges in making informed decisions about the children. CASA volunteers are needed now for children in La Plata County and Montezuma County. Volunteers in the Supervised Exchange and Parenting Time (SEPT) program assist in providing a nurturing and safe environment for children and parents to do supervised visitation or exchanges. SEPT volunteers supervise parenting time and provide a safe place for children and their non-custodial parent to visit. Through safe exchanges, SEPT volunteers provide a safe place for children to transition between parents and homes to reduce high-conflict interactions. Perhaps you're working on your 10th novel. We don't care if you just started writing or just finished the thing, we want your first page! This January the Durango Public Library is running the Fourth Annual Page One Contest. Winners receive a $100 Maria's gift certificate and their work aired on the Page One radio program. The winning pages will be selected by mid-February and will be aired on KSUT & KDUR in March 2026. Contest rules are as follows: "One page" means approx. 300 - 500 words, typed. Submissions must be original works by locals only. Fiction, poetry, non-fiction, young adult, and children's genres are all welcome. This contest is for writers ages 14 and older. All submissions must include a title. Submissions can be emailed to spenser.snarr@durangoco.gov or dropped off at Durango Public Library between January 1-January 31.

The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance presents the film Journey Down the Gila, (say Hee La) at 7 pm, Thursday, December 4, 2025 at the Durango Arts Center. This special screening captures both the beauty of the Gila River and the powerful story of three New Mexico teens who lost their lives in service to the wild. The film follows their mothers’ emotional voyage down the river — and the ongoing effort to keep the Gila free-flowing and untamed. There will also be a talk with filmmaker David Garcia and special guests, along with opportunities to support efforts to keep the Gila River wild. 51st Annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Festival Join us for the 51st annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Festival at the La Plata County Fairgrounds and Events Center. This three day festival takes place Friday, December 5 from 1pm-5pm, Saturday, December 6 from 9-5pm and Sunday, December 7 from 10am-3pm. The festival features 75 regional arts and crafts vendors, food, and prize drawings. Toys for Tots will be on location collecting toys for children 0-18 years old. Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Mobile Public Health Program is back in La Plata county for the holidays. They will be at Manna Soup Kitchen in Durango on Tuesday Dec. 9th from 9am-1pm and at Pine River Shares in Bayfield on Wednesday, Dec 10th from noon to 6pm.
