An exhibition curated by Center of Southwest Studies Fellow and FLC graduate, Malorie King (Mescalero Apache/Diné) Exhibition on view: January 30-May 16, 2025 Reception: January 30 at 4:30-6:30 PM This exhibition will be held in the lobby entryway of the CSWS building. Free Center of Southwest Studies Fellow and recent Fort Lewis College graduate, Malorie King (Mescalero Apache/Diné), has curated a selection of artwork from the Center’s Museum collections as a culmination of a year of research and inquiry into creative expression of traditional Indigenous knowledge sharing and intertribal values. "At its core, this project represents reciprocity—our shared responsibility to honor the teachings of our elders, respect all forms of life, and contribute meaningfully to our communities. Just as Indigenous knowledge is rooted in values of kinship, gratitude, and community, each of us carries a cultural lineage that can inspire and guide us. Through this exhibition, I aim to honor the communities, mentors, and traditions that have shaped me, while planting seeds for a future where Indigenous voices and knowledge systems thrive." - Malorie King, curator Center of Southwest Studies swcenter.fortlewis.edu Contact: Cristie Scott, cmscott@fortlewis.edu or Malorie King, msking@fortlewis.edu

80 and Still Climbing: Robert Winslow Takes on the Sky Steps for Charity Durango, CO – In honor of his 80th birthday on May 14, 2025, long-time La Plata County resident and outdoor enthusiast Robert Winslow is taking on a personal challenge—and inviting the community to join him in giving back. To celebrate this milestone and support two organizations close to his heart, Robert is launching a fundraiser benefiting the San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA) and the La Plata County Humane Society. His challenge? Hiking all 529 Sky Steps in Durango—eight times—one round for each decade of his life. “I’ve called this incredible place home for 44 years,” said Winslow. “It only felt right to celebrate by doing something I love while raising money for causes I believe in.” How to Participate: Community members are encouraged to pledge donations based on Robert’s hike: Per Round: Donate an amount per round (e.g., $1 x 8 rounds = $8). Per Step: Donate an amount per step (e.g., $0.01 x 529 steps x 8 rounds = $42.32). Benefiting Organizations: San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA): Dedicated to inspiring and empowering people to explore, learn about, and protect the public lands of Southwest Colorado. Their programs focus on conservation, stewardship, and youth education. La Plata County Humane Society: Provides shelter, care, and advocacy for animals in need, supporting humane education, adoption, and efforts to reduce pet overpopulation. About Robert Winslow: Robert has devoted his life to the natural world—as a hiker, teacher, and photographer. His achievements include: Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1971 (the 36th person ever to do so). Teaching wilderness studies and outdoor education at Idaho State University. Leading international photography tours to Africa, the Galápagos, Yellowstone, and more. Section-hiking the Colorado Trail at age 77 (2021–2022). He continues to share his love of nature through his photography at www.robertwinslowphoto.com. Join the Celebration: Let’s make Robert’s 80th birthday unforgettable—and support the causes he’s passionate about.
