OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT: Navajo Dub of "Star Wars: A New Hope" Thurs, September 26 on the CSWS Courtyard Free Presented by the Center of SW Studies and Reed Library Enjoy a movie night under the stars with the classic hero’s epic of a young farm boy who intercepts a distress call from Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan. This special screening of Star Wars: A New Hope (Sǫʼtah Anaaʼ: Siih Náhásdlįį) is the first major motion picture to be translated into the Navajo language (English subtitles) and features the talents of 70 Diné voice actors. **6:00 PM - Special guest, Manuelito Wheeler (Diné), former director of the Navajo Nation Museum, will share a pre-screening presentation about the creative process and multi-year journey of bringing the film to life. **7:30 PM - The screening will be held outside in the Center of Southwest Studies courtyard and will start at dark, approximately 7:30 pm. Chairs and popcorn will be provided, or you can bring your own. Extra points if you dress as your favorite character! Movie-goers can also stop into the Center of Southwest Studies’ gallery for a final viewing of the critically acclaimed exhibition, “THE RETURN OF THE FORCE,” which explores the significant influence the Star Wars movies have had on contemporary Native artists through an innovative collection of work that addresses themes such as resistance, place, belonging, and Indigenous knowledge. The Durango Public Library Annual Literary Festival is back this October 5 -19! The Festival will feature readings, book signings, conversations, and writing workshops from local and regional Authors, including: The Durango Poet Laureates; Esther Belin and Zoe Golden, Heather Hansman, Ramona Emerson, Scott Graham, Kinsale Drake + NDN Girls Book Club, Kali Fajardo-nstine, and the Raven Narratives. Keynote events will offer light refreshments and book signings in partnership with Maria’s Bookshop. There will also be book clubs, a talk on publishing and more! Oct. 5, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.: Durango Public Library Annual Literary Festival: Page One Writing Contest Reception: Celebrate local writers of all ages! Come learn about the upcoming writing contest and the exciting line up for our 2024 Literary Festival!

Oct. 7, 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Durango Public Library Annual Literary Festival: Heather Hansman Book Club: In these book clubs, there is no required reading, join us to discuss Heather’s works, writing style, research, and more. Heather is a freelance writer and editor who likes the intersection of science, adventure, and culture. She is a contributing editor at Outside magazine, and she writes for places like The Guardian, Sierra, and The New York Times. Tea and snacks provided! Oct. 8, 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Durango Public Library Annual Literary Festival Ramona Emerson Book Club In these book clubs, there is no required reading, join us to discuss Ramona’s works, writing style, research, and more. Oct. 2nd through Oct. 6th it’s The 36th Annual Durango Cowboy Gathering. A celebration of Durango’s western heritage with evening shows and Saturday sessions highlighting cowboy poetry, music, and storytelling. The Bar D Wranglers headline the Wednesday night show at the Doubletree. Friday activities include a train ride to Silverton and a horseback trail ride through the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Both adventures include lunch and entertainment. Saturday morning features the famous Cowboy parade as well as a new event called the Horseback Social which takes place before the parade.. Fun filled family events such as the petting corral, horseback rides for kids, roping demonstrations and much more will be offered. There will be music, poetry and cowboy humor throughout the day and evening, both downtown and at the Doubletree. Check out the website at www.durangocowboygathering.org for details.
