Southwest Center for Independence has been part of Southwest Colorado for more than 35 years. Founded in 1990 by local people with disabilities and supporters of the Independent Living movement, SWCI believes that people with disabilities should have the opportunity to make their own choices, direct their own lives, and participate fully in their communities. Today, we're growing — providing support, training, transportation and other services for people with disabilities and those who are aging throughout La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores and San Juan counties. And we're looking for community members who want to grow with us. If you're passionate about disability rights, nonprofit leadership, finance, law, community service, or simply making Southwest Colorado more inclusive, consider joining the Southwest Center for Independence Board of Directors. Great Garden Series: with Jude Schuenemeyer, Old Colorado Apples - Past, Present, Future Wednesday, Oct. 28: 4:30– 6pm Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project (MORP) was co-founded by Jude and Addie Schuenemeyer in 2008, who drew upon their experiences in horticulture and managing a nursery. MORP works to preserve Colorado's fruit-growing heritage and restore an orchard culture and economy to the southwest region.

Join us for a special presentation by members of the Herstory Printmaking Collective, a collaborative artist group based in Albuquerque, NM that creates portrait murals of influential women who have impacted how we see and understand the world. Using an accessible relief printmaking technique to make bold and compelling images printed onto newsprint for wheat pasting, Herstory has lead workshops, live printmaking demos, and installed murals in venues across the Southwest, including the Santa Fe Railyard, the Beehive Building in Mancos, University of New Mexico’s Masley Art Gallery, at the Southwest Printmaking Fiesta in Silver City, and on the mobile Axle Contemporary Gallery among other sites. This fall, the Center of Southwest Studies will partner with Herstory Printmaking Collective to facilitate a printmaking workshop with Fort Lewis College Art & Design students, inspired by important women figures sourced from the Center’s archival and museum collections. The resulting portraits of “Women of the Southwest” will be installed in the Center for an ongoing exhibition.

"Secrets of the Forest" Free documentary film showing followed by panel discussion with Q&A. Can forest ecosystems help cool the planet? Panelists will be Bruce Short, a local consulting forester and retired USDA-FS employee, and Elli Morris, educator, and Tree Storyteller, with a Masters degree in Forestry.
