Karen's Furniture As Art Live Auction piece will be on display at Wildflower, 532 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301
One of my favorite mediums is found objects. I'm inspired by
metal, wood, mirrors and plastic, and like to construct sculptures with them.
This sculpture, entitled "More Than a Box, She's Ahead of Her Time",
incorporates architectural elements with some furniture parts mixed in.
I've been "making art" since I was a child, although I really began to focus in
high school under the instruction of an excellent teacher. Inspired by him, I
attended Southern Illinois University, studying Art and Art Education. After
graduating, I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and continued painting and
exhibiting. Due to the lack of art teaching positions, I taught Environmental
Education and Natural History.
In 1988, I moved to Durango and began exhibiting in shows at the Durango Arts
Center. Eventually, I opened The Art Room Gallery where I taught art and
exhibited the work of local artists for six years. In 2001, as the Technical
Director for the Theatre Department at Fort Lewis, I instructed students on the
design and construction of stage sets.
Currently, I have a studio in the Smiley Building. Private art classes are
available for all ages. Art commissions are welcomed.
