Jenny Treanor

Jenny's Furniture As Art Silent Auction piece will be on display at Ska Brewing Co., 225 Girard Street, Durango, CO 81303

Jenny earned her BA degree in Psychology and worked several years as a Recreational Therapist in nursing homes.  She then focused her creative energy on parenting, gardening, homemaking and quilting.   She later earned a Masters in Counseling and worked for an adoption agency before beginning her current occupation as an employee assistance counselor.

In May, 2005 a trip to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC ignited a spark of inspiration which turned into a flame after touring the studio of a mixed media artist in Boulder, CO.

Although she has no formal training as an artist, she’s responded creatively to clients of all ages over many years.  She looks for their strengths and gifts and builds on those.  Similarly, her artistic expression with inanimate objects is a response to the unique attributes of discarded items.  In the process, she brings new life to the objects and to herself in the process.

My process of creating art is similar to Jungian dream work.  In dreams our unconscious pieces together what appear to be random elements in order to reveal something to us.

My process begins with hunting and gathering.  I lose myself meandering through antique stores, flea markets, thrift stores and junkyards.  An item strikes my curiosity, intrigues my imagination and I take it home.  I’m most drawn to pieces that show wear and tear.  The patina that comes from use in everyday life has an energy that is honest, unapologetic and beautiful.

Once home, I allow my gaze to wander over my collection of “stuff” and my intuition joins disparate items together.  In the tradition of my mother and grandmother, I often “make do” with what materials I have on hand.  I see the objects as form, not the function for which they were intended.  Sometimes the creation is simply pleasing to my senses but often it reveals an unexpected message.  These revelations may be whimsical, poignant or mystical.  Creation of my wabi sabi wonderments is an adventure that is healing and revitalizing.
